My students come from diverse backgrounds. Our school often has the greatest ethnic diversity of all the schools in the state. The majority of them receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school encourages project-based learning, especially those activities that promote the development of 21st-century skills.
Like most kids, my students thrive in a learning environment in which they are actively engaged and challenged.
Our school encourages technology-based learning which typically prepares students for high demand professions but also has a side effect of increased screen and seat time. I like incorporating technology activities but also want to keep my classes physically active and provide supportive learning environments.
My Project
What better experience is there to learn about how sound is produced than by building a speaker? I want to give my students the opportunity to learn about waves, energy, and sound through a real world application. The BOSEbuild kits address all of these topics and more through a series of engaging and hands-on activities. Unlike other lab activities I have previously used, these speaker box kits work every time and are accessible to any student.
These BOSEbuild speaker kits are a great way for students to get exposure to a STEM field.
Students learn how the speaker's electronics and technology work. What I am most excited about is building upon the activities that accompany the BOSEbuild kit. Students will showcase their understanding of sound production knowledge in a speaker engineering challenge. In this challenge, students will design an amplifier. They will choose their own materials and manipulate the shapes of the materials to increase sound production. They will be able to test their design using the BOSEbuild speaker cubes.
