This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a low income, high poverty school where my kiddos face many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of my students qualify to receive free or reduced price lunch and when given the opportunity for a second chance breakfast almost all of them take it.

Despite these challenges, I am looking to help my students become the best version of themselves each and every day.

I may not be able to control their home life, but I focus on what I can do for my students and their potential not only in the classroom but for their future lives as well.

My Project

We are requesting a bench and activity tables. Given the opportunity to expand my flexible seating in the classroom would allow students to take control and responsibility for their learning. During the day and even in small groups instruction, students can choose a seat in the classroom that would benefit their learning as much as possible.

Making sure students have voice and choice in their learning is an essential component of having consistent motivation.

I have noticed the difference in my students when they are given a choice and voice for their seating arrangement. When students have these opportunities in the classroom there is a noticeable difference in engagement with their work.

The bench and tables I have selected will help my students by giving even more additional seating choices to make their learning experience more successful. The added tables would allow for more individual space for students to be able to work independently but also for group work and collaboration. I plan to put these tables together with ones that I already have in my classroom, so that I can form some bigger groups. The picnic bench is a great option for my students as well. It allows for additional flexible seating options, this way my students aren't stuck staying at a table.
