Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach Kindergarten, which means for most of my students it is their first time in school so this is the time they develop a long-lasting association to school and learning. I am in the process of creating a wonderful fantasy space where I combine my students interest with education.
The theme in my classroom is Pokemon and I use Pokemon stickers and Pokemon cards as rewards and incentives in class.
The kids are really motivated by them, and, even better is the fact that the Pokemon cards get them interested in reading- they are always so curious to know what the powers the pokemon have! They always come and ask me at the end of the day "what powers does it have?," and some are starting to read the powers themselves.
This incentive system ties directly into literacy and into their motivation in the classroom. I want to increase the efficacy of this motivation system by tying it into the decorations in the room. What, at first, may seem like a frivolous want, neon lights will help beautify the room and will directly affect learning outcomes. Ask yourself, how do you feel when you are in a beautiful place? On the other hand, how do you feel when you are stuck in a bland, dull place? My littles are in the room for up to 7 hours a day- your donation will make a huge difference for them!
