About My Students

This project is led and organized by young chefs wanting to develop new recipes using ingredients from our gardens and local produce. The Wellness Center will allow these creative young adults to prepare delicious, healthy items which can be presented at food tastings around the school.

They were tired of seeing everyone bring in processed foods, junk food and making unhealthy food choices. They want their recipes to represent their ideas for helping community members eat with fresh, healthy ingredients. Many students here have little access to these fresh items, so it is imperative that our students change the mindset of the community. We want neighbors and family members to visit and see cooking demonstrations of the students to spread the news about our wellness effort. It is our hope to partner with local chefs to allow students to visit local restaurants for inspiration about new and exciting methods to make healthy food taste delicious.

First and foremost, this project will allow students to use their creativity to develop their own healthy eating recipes. Many of the students want to be chefs, dietitians, nurses and nutritionists. These are the careers they want to pursue in the future. Academic skills can become proficient through participation in this project. Math skills are frequently utilized while preparing food in recipes. Measurements, temperatures and making multiple amounts must be analyzed while cooking. Reading will be accomplished through the review of recipes, cooking methods and study of new ingredients on our Kindle Fires. In addition, writing will be the focus as students prepare a cookbook filled with newly developed recipes and personal experiences. Common Core elements will be constantly emphasized as part of the Best Chef program.

In Their Own Words

We are trying to make a difference here at our school by promoting healthy recipes and cooking styles. Many of our friends are fat, and we do not like seeing them feel bad about themselves. We formed the Wellness Warriors to help our friends feel better about themselves. We always get junk food at corner stores which is bad for us. This has to change or we all will be overweight and feel bad. We want to help our friends and families to feel better.

Our teacher, Mr. Thomas, makes us feel like a million dollars. He believes we can do many things while he guides us gently along the way. We have to learn things on our own or we won't be prepared for college. We won't have Mr.Thomas there, so we have to be independent. Being a school leader will help us become better citizens and become mature. We can help in our community too.

We have to find ways to help out our friends and family members. Our school does not have many programs to accomplish this goal, so we have to do projects on our own. Mr. Thomas, our teacher coach, has helped us learn how to be independent without treating us like babies. He treats us like adults, and his expectations are high. He believes in us, and we believe in our goal to help others lead healthy lives. We want to extend this out to our community which has many needs.
