My students have a variety of physical and cognitive limitations. Many of them are unable to walk or maintain trunk control without adaptive equipment. They are unable to participate in activities such as swimming without modifications, and therefore, they are unable to participate all together.
My students are genuine and full of joy!
They know no strangers and hold no judgments. They are concerned with ensuring that they are happy. They do not dwell on the trivial, daily worries that most of society focuses on. They are positive and able to start each day fresh! They attend a large, public school, where they are the only students who are provided instruction in a self-contained classroom. They love being outside, listening to music, socializing, and gaining independence. We spend lots of time incorporating themes into our units throughout the school year.
My Project
Our students will be able to participate in aquatic therapy sessions one time/month for four consecutive months during the spring. This opportunity will allow the students to work with teachers, therapists, and peers through an enjoyable activity. Water allows students to work on developmental skills by the pressure created by water, as well as the support provided by the buoyancy of water. Motor skills, speech, self-control, and strength could all be affected positively through this experience. Swimming provides feedback to students that may engage their body and mind in a new, innovative way. Most of all, we are providing our students with an opportunity that could open many doors for them!
Our students may have the ability to make progress never seen before during instruction in the typical classroom setting.
By allowing students to explore new environments, we are pushing them to reach their potential and engage themselves through therapy, exposure, and enjoyment!
