My Students
I teach kindergarten in a diverse urban setting in the Philadelphia School District. I have 30 learners in my classroom, many of whom have never attended Pre K.
I teach at a Title I School where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students have not been exposed to education previous to entering my classroom. They all come to my classroom eager to learn and it is my job to provide the foundation they need to be lifelong learners. This year we have been focusing on using technology in our classroom to help us across the curriculum.
My Project
Comfortable seating allows students to work and read independently. During independent work time students can chose a location in the classroom that is most comfortable for them. Currently my students sit at their tables to read books or on the carpet. They take clip boards to tables or the caret for reading response journals. Making students comfortable is an essential component to motivate them. I have seen first hand how engaged they are in their work and reading when they can chose their seating and location.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are give a choice of where they want to work in the room.
This bench will provide a cozy environment and will give my students additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. This bench will additionally be a place to store classroom supplies and books. I have seen how excited my students are when they can work independently in our classroom and this bench will motivate them to read and work quietly in a comfortable space!
