My Project

Teaching recorders to students (3rd, 4th and 5th grade students) is an altogether challenging task especially in getting them motivated to finish through the whole unit.

Recorder Karate is a self-paced recorder instruction method that teaches basic techniques used in wind instruments through nine folk songs.

The heart of this method is a positive reward system in which students receive coloured "karate belts" to hang from their recorders for each progressively more difficult tune. Acquiring these belts normally motivates the students to work hard in order to get more belts. In addition, students learn to be musically literate and what it means to be a contributing member of an instrumental ensemble.

The first year I taught this, the students loved it! I was very excited to introduce this exciting and innovative way for pupils to learn and discover the recorder and give them the basic understating of how to read music.

I had kids lined up outside my door during my planning times because they want to earn their karate belts. The response was tremendous! I had classroom teachers tell me how great they thought this idea was and how the students wouldn’t stop talking about it!

At our end of the year awards assembly, I have the students play their recorder songs showcasing their progress. Music and performing arts are a fantastic way for children to be able to express themselves and show their natural creativity.
