Our school is multicultural and rich with so many different nationalities. Our students truly look like those amazing children holding hands around the globe pictures!
Our diverse school includes twenty five percent of our students who have parents in the military.
Our population is nearly fifty percent minority. We have about sixteen percent of our students on free or reduced price lunch. In addition, we have a large ESE percentage. Most recently, we are seeing the effects of Hurricane Irma and receiving students from Puerto Rico who are learning English for the first time.
Our school is tasked with making gains on the state test each year, by creating the space and mindset that is conducive to each child achieving his or her goals. This is always a priority and a challenge to raise our standards and encourage our students to perform their very best.
My Project
You know what they say, "The more you read, the more you know!" My students love, love, love to read. The problem at times is getting great books into their hands. Studies have shown that students make the most gains on state wide test when they have a proficient reading level. This level can be obtained by getting students to not only read, but enjoy what they are reading. This gives me the challenge of providing books that are interesting for my students to read and enjoy their experience. Likewise, these books need to be a variety of reading levels to help each student find their own interests on their own level.
Bent, torn, taped together, or even missing pages: these books like Harriet the Spy and Harry Potter are definitely the books that spend the least amount of time on the shelves in our classroom and are most loved by my students.
Many of these such books are in need of being replaced. It is always a heartbreaking day when one of the most loved books can no longer be repaired. This project will keep my kids in the book reading business with no more heartaches.
