Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a multicultural inner city school full of 550+ ambitious students. Most of my students love to watch and/or participate in our school performing arts. But as the school was being remodeled, the stage was completely eliminated and our performing arts program suffered.
Given the socioeconomic status of the area, most of my students haven't had the opportunity to participate in performing arts programs outside of school.
And given the cultural diversity in my school's area, most of my students aren't even aware of the performing arts programs that are available.
This is my fifth year at my current school and I'm slowly rebuilding my school's performing arts program. I started with an honor choir, and I've slowly added dance and drama. And hopefully by creating a network of support, it will enable my performing arts program to grow even more.
My Project
This project is yet another way for my students to musically grow. I haven't used bells in my classroom thus far. But I have seen many videos on interactive bell playing, and I'm excited to introduce it to my students. And who knows? Maybe my students will get good enough to perform a few bell pieces for a school program.
And who doesn't love playing with rhythm sticks!?
Rhythm sticks are used in my classroom a few times each year, so the number of sticks tends to dwindle due to breakage and splintering. My students learn, play, and create rhythm stick games that can be played as a whole group, a small group, or with a partner. They love it!
