My Students
Second grade is such a wonderful year of learning. We have so many different types of learners with many different needs. I have had the privilege of teaching students with Autism, Gifted and Talented, students with ADHD, students who receive Speech and Language Services, and students who are considered typically developing. We have a diverse set of needs that need to be met every day.
My students have unique traits and backgrounds and when we come together they make our classroom feel like a family.
I am so excited for the learning that my students will show this year. They will learn to take time to do quality work and let their effort shine. These kids come from families who support and nurture their creative drive and give them the tools they need to be successful later in their education and life.
My Project
I want the students in my classroom to know that they matter. The feeling of being loved, noticed, and celebrated for who they are is easy to see with a teacher's actions and words, but what about places where it's less obvious? For example, the classroom library shelf. My students need to be able to see themselves on the pages of the books we read or use diverse stories to learn about the experiences of their classmates.
Representation matters, and it should be apparent by the books on classroom library shelves.
On my classroom library shelves, you will not find cats in hats that make silly rhymes while misrepresenting the cultures of my students. You will find books that show that ALL children, regardless of their skin tone or gender identity, have the world at their hands and that they are worthy of love and they matter. This project would add more books like that to our classroom library shelf and present my students with wider reading opportunities. Our community is predominantly white, which makes it so much more important to make sure that students of color are seen, as well as showing white students that the world is a colorful place outside of our community and all voices deserve to be heard.
These books would be a positive addition to our classroom and help my students "Believe in Your Shelf."
