This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are very resilient despite their socioeconomic status and residing in one of the poorest congressional district in the United States. My students show a strong desire to complete their high school requirements and go into a post secondary education. For many of my students, they will be the first high school graduate in their family as well as the first one to attend college.
The one thing that impresses me about many of my students is how they utilize their 47 minute lunch period.
Many of them will choose the time to study or attend tutoring.
My Project
As a school counselor one of my areas of focus is monitoring how well my students are performing in their classes. Every month when I meet with my students I check in with them to see how things are going. Then we move on to review their grades. Our school uses a database called Skedula where we can see the students overall grades and when you click on the class there is a dropdown that shows three areas. Those areas are Major assignments, Minor assignments and Homework. These areas shows the dates, the assignment and the grade. Depending on the how the student is doing, I may ask questions. When I notice a student is not performing well I inquire about the root causes and what are the steps necessary for him/her to take to improve their grades. Often times I notice that students not doing their homework is a huge factor and they often say they forgot to write it down.
I believe that having these designated notebook planners to write down homework assignments, project reminders etc.
