My Students
My school serves about 450 students that are bused daily from various low-income apartment complexes. Our students speak around 25 different languages coming from all walks of life. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. The students come from refugee families with little to no English background, families living in motels, families with little support at home because parent/s are working two or more jobs, and they come from families who need any good support from our class.
Because of the diverse language background of my students, English is not always something they excel in.
I want to help them become fluent speakers, readers, and writers in English. Over the past few years, the pandemic has had a negative impact on my students. Wearing a mask for almost 3 years has caused many to hide behind the mask and not speak up during class. Providing opportunities to hold collaborative conversations during lessons will help build my students confidence when speaking in English.
My Project
I teach 5th grade. The last time my students had a normal school year was when they were in second grade. They were just in the beginning of their education when the pandemic hit and school shut down. Since then, they have either known school to be online or in person but wearing a mask. Many students use the mask as a way to not speak up during class. They are falling behind socially and academically because they have not been talking to each other like normal.
By providing my class with headphones that have a microphone, they will be able to record themselves speaking.
Sometimes it is had to hear what one student is saying because they are talking so quietly behind their mask. I want to use the headphones to have my students practice speaking clearly and loudly. They will then be able to listen to their recording and start improving their English. My job, as their teacher, is to help them become fluent in speaking, reading, and writing in English. I want to be able to provide them with the chance to do just that.
