Being a Kid During a Worldwide Pandemic is Stressful!

Help me give my students activities and items to use in small group, individual, whole class social emotional learning sessions as well as calming tools for our zen den.

My Students

I am an elementary school counselor. My students are fantastic, inquisitive young people who love learning ways to support their mental health as well as appropriate social skills. The last two years have been difficult for everyone but especially for those students with a history of trauma. Coping with the stress of a pandemic has made learning difficult. My students are very receptive to the mindfulness lessons we have started at our school and would benefit from even more opportunities to learn and practice social skills and stress management.

My students face a stressful world in which they have very little control. They live where they must, eat what they're given, and do what they're told. The adults make the decisions and the kids have pulled along for the ride. Many of them seek control over their lives by becoming immersed in the world of computer games. Unfortunately, they struggle when it comes to engaging appropriately with their peers in the real world, not online. My students need tools to help them calm, focus and regulate their emotions

My Project

My project will address the unique needs I have seen as a result of the pandemic. The students in my school have always had a high degree of social-emotional difficulties but the pandemic has made those difficulties so much worse. First, I would like to address the student's social needs. The students have been isolated. I have chosen puzzles as a way for them to interact with others.

Many of my students struggle with developing coping skills to help with their stressful lives.

Their only way of coping is to retreat into video games and YouTube. In these computerized worlds, they find a sense of accomplishment, success and belonging. I want them to experience those feelings in the real world also. I want my students to use actual puzzles with actual people - not avatars on screens.

Second, I would like to create a place in the counseling office where students can come and regulate their emotions. When a student is anxious or overwhelmed, they can come and use the fidgets and calming toys to help themselves return to a state of relaxation. I call this place, The Zen Den.

Lastly, I am requesting art supplies so my students can express their feelings in a number of different ways and with different mediums. The trauma of the pandemic has taken an emotional toll on my young students. They need an opportunity to work through their emotions.
