Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Walking into our school, you will find a diverse group of kids. Many of my students are English language learners, which means they are learning how to read, write, and speak English.
Our classroom is in an urban environment, filled with kids from all walks of life.
We are a Title I school, and our whole school gets free breakfast and lunch. I have a few students with troubled homes, which makes me work harder to create an environment where every child feels safe and able to learn the skills necessary to be ready for middle school and beyond.
My Project
I have selected a variety of books to go in the class library and book bins that will allow me to level the books from beginning readers to more advanced readers. Each child has a book bag that will be filled with "just right" reading materials. Research shows that students are most successful and gain the most benefits from silent reading when they are selecting and reading books that are exactly at their reading level.
Improving the quality of our class library with new books, organized by level, will allow my students to select books that interest them at their reading level.
This will ensure they can successfully read independently. This will foster a love for reading as students feel successful and excited when reading these books. Having a tool to repair damaged books will ensure that much loved books can stay in circulation in my library.
