There is a rhythm and a beauty when great literature is read aloud and read well. It makes the story come alive and transports you anywhere that the author wants to take you. It's a magical experience and one that every child deserves to have.
I teach in a self-contained classroom of elementary students with severe behavior issues.
They come to me from around my district after they have struggled in their home school. The school that I am at has a staggeringly high poverty rate and my entire room is comprised of high poverty students.
Many of my students feel like they have been written off by every adult in their life. They all desperately desire to learn. though, and are hungry for a chance to read. Throughout their lives they've been made to feel like learning is something that they never will be able to achieve, but they are passionate to prove those naysayers wrong.
My Project
Many of my students have had limited exposure to literature read aloud. They have not had the amazing experience of listening to a story and having characters and places and plots come alive in their heads. They struggle to read themselves because they're not sure what it should sound like.
I'm asking for 10 books on CD and their printed counterparts so that my students can improve their reading skills by being able to listen to what good reading sounds like. I want them to hear how literature was meant to be heard and then use that experience to take their own reading education to the next level.
My students have made huge reading growth in this school year and they are desperate to continue their growth.
Please help them continue in their learning by helping to provide the resources that will take them to that next step. Thank you!
