My Project

The students I see for counseling as a Behavioral Health Specialist are all faced with mental health issues like anxiety, depression, trauma, and anger. They are unique in every way, but all hold the same need to feel seen and heard. My job as a BHS is to make sure my students are working their hardest to achieve a healthy physical and mental space.

With the tools gained in this Donorschoose donation, I will be able to implement strategies to improve negative moods, manage anger appropriately, and reduce anxiety and frustration in the classroom setting.

The STEM kits will allow nonverbal students to participate with peers and help facilitate the use of social skills with others. The Amazon Fire tablets will allow for the learning of social and emotional lessons through program such as GoZen, TeachTown, and the MindUp curriculum. Snacks will be used as incentives for students to participate in group and individual lessons. The goals for these lessons are to improve self-esteem, create opportunities to demonstrate appropriate social skills, and allow students to express themselves creatively while participating in individual and group therapy. Many of my students lack the capacity to communicate effectively with others, and through the use of these online and science programs, they will be able to learn appropriate skills that will hopefully stick with them through adulthood.

These materials will help all 26 of my students continue to recover from the impact of COVID over these last few years. The lack of social interactions, job security, and fear on a global level has impacted my students greatly. With the help of your donations, I will continue to be able to provide mental health services at the public high school level to the best of my ability.
