Beginning With The End In Mind After Hurricane Harvey
My students need Clorox wipes, brooms, safety materials, other cleaning materials and fans to help foster responsibility and a healthy environment in our home away from home.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Before you walk into my school, you may see on paper, we are a Title One school with a majority of students receiving free or reduced price lunch with limited resources for our students; however, what you will see in person is a dynamic group of young, driven leaders who through The Leader in Me Process, are making their mark in our world. We are a Lighthouse Leader in Me/Magnet Fine Arts school, which has helped transform all of our students into global thinkers who believe they have a chance in life.
While many of my students come from poverty-stricken homes, the problem is not the lack of desire; it's the lack of resources and Hurricane Harvey depleted the small amount we had.
It is hard for them to compete against other children at other schools due to the minimal resources at home and at our school. Being a fine arts magnet school, our children are full of amazing talent that deserves to be shown to the rest of the community. Many of my students have learning disabilities such as dyslexia, processing skills and basic reasoning, or they have just been identified.
My Project
For everyone, it is important to be organized and clean in a working environment; however, many of my students come from homes without order and cleanliness which spills into our family classroom. With the heat and humidity, it is a struggle to keep germs under control or the room cooled down. My students are learning that they are responsible for cleaning up after themselves and proactively taking care of our home. When getting ready to leave, my student family is responsible for wiping the desks, sweeping the floors and organizing all materials before the next day. With the donation of Clorox wipes, gloves, brooms and a Swiffer jet will help my students accomplish our daily goals.
I ask for donations for these materials every year from school, but I rarely get any.
My students want to take care of our home by creating a healthy environment, but we do not receive the support needed. Not only are they learning responsibility, but they understand we should help others who keep our school clean and take pride in our area. This is a life-long skill we want all children to take with them when they leave our community.
