Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher in Los Angeles. Approximately 60 percent of the students at our school are African American, about 30 percent are Latino, and the remaining 10 percent are a mix of Pakistani, Ethiopian, Anglo American and others. I always have many talented children in my classes, and I am always looking to expand the educational program I deliver.
The reading program my school district provides is good in many ways, but tends to lack in the area of actual books that students can use to practice the reading skills taught during the days' lessons. Books for beginning readers are essential! All of the books included here are tried and true. They have been around for a long time. We had them when we were kids. The kids in my class need them now. Please give.
The titles I have selected are excellent for targeting early reading skills. They are closely aligned with the method I use for teaching reading; and, not least, they have clever and lively illustrations that engage young readers. I already have some of these books in my class, but my personal copies of them are ragged and dirty and falling apart from years of little hands paging through them.
Your generosity will help my students learn to read. Plain and simple. Kids are more engaged with books in their hands. It is always a great pleasure for me to see my students immersed in reading their own copies of books they can read, books that you will help to provide. Rest assured: this donation will make a real difference.
