My Students

I am a middle school History teacher in a high needs NYC area. I service the 7th grade as well as the 6th grade.

My students have to overcome many language barriers, learn the English language and required school concepts with little or no help from their parents.

Their parents are unable to help them in the educational area due to lack of knowledge and understanding of the English language as well as knowledge of these concepts. My students work hard and often support their mothers and fathers by running household errands and watching younger siblings. Unfortunately, another aspect my students share is that the majority (+65%) of the families in my school are struggling financially.

My Project

My students have many different abilities.

They speak over 20 different languages and are reading at 10 different levels.

I need more paper and staplers to create differentiated reading packets so that every student may access the text.

I deal with at least three curricular elements: (1) content—input, what students learn; (2) process—how students go about making sense of ideas and information; and (3) product—output, or how students demonstrate what they have learned.

By differentiating these three elements, I can offer different approaches to what students learn, how they learn it, and how they demonstrate what they’ve learned. Help me help them by providing this paper to make these packets.
