Bees, Badgers and Bears, What Do They Have in Common?

Help me give my students 31 fiction and nonfiction books about Wisconsin garden and woodland animals: bees, badgers, bears, rabbits, hedgehogs, mice, goats, and porcupines with matching realistic looking stuffed animals, beeswax crayons, honeycomb and a beehouse!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

You can find them all in Wisconsin! Wisconsinites, yes I am one, are proud of our animals, their habitats, and our unique glacial landscapes. In my smaller microcosm, my school's gardens, I am trying to teach my students about the many different types of communities with which we are a part. One such community, is our garden. We talk about how we have neighbors outside of our garden, and how we can be respectful to them when we are outside. We talk about the animals that live in our garden and in our neighbors nearby lawns: squirrels, bees, ants, spiders, rabbits, centipedes, worms, birds (chickens), even an occasional wild turkey! We talk about how we can look at the animals in the garden but we do not want to hurt them.

This project's theme is to educate my student's about the animals that live in our community, with a focus within our courtyard garden.

We will read nonfiction and fictional books about bees, rabbits, mice, hedgehogs, porcupines, goats, bears, and of course badgers! Now, we don't actually have all of these animals in our garden. This is where the stuffed animals come into play, quite literally. Our classroom is a play based learning environment; we also take this approach when we are outside. I am writing a series of projects, that will incrementally bring replications of the animals or characters that we read about in books from our garden library. I am creating a library that will follow animals and animal characters through the Wisconsin seasons; making science and literacy connections through play. I believe this will be a natural way for the children to learn about seasonal changes and how it effects both our lives and the animals that are both seen and hidden within our garden and beyond.
