Creativity, imagination, problem solving and collaboration are key components to authentic learning in our classroom. I have high expectations for every student. It is my responsibility to provide a variety of learning opportunities to help each child meet or exceed their goals. Our school is a K-2 school with approximately 1,100 children enrolled.
We have a diverse population of ethnic backgrounds, a growing ELL population, a high percentage of students who need accelerated learning opportunities, and students who need reading and math interventions to help them establish a firm foundation for successful learning.
My Project
A Bee-Bot robot tool is a fun, bee shaped bot that is kid friendly. The bots allow kids to learn and explore beginning coding skills. This is a great tool for teaching a variety of skills such as sequencing, estimation, problem-solving, directionality, and vocabulary. Bee-Bots create a great deal of excitement and intrigue with second graders. As students play and interact, they also communicate, explore, and engage with each other, but most importantly, they learn together. By using Bee-Bots, I am providing learning experiences that help to develop language, literacy and numeracy skills.
Literacy is the foundation of school achievement in all subject areas.
Nightly reading of fiction and nonfiction books at home is crucial to building successful readers. I recently had my project titled, Reading is in the bag: Growing Families through Literacy, and I would love to add more thematic books, science and math activities to the reading bags. This literacy project will bridge the gap between home and school by fostering parental involvement, interactions and engagement. The thematic literacy bags will provide families with a balance of fiction and nonfiction literature which supplement the second grade language arts, math, science, health and social studies curriculum. Students will select a thematic literacy bag each week to take home and explore. Children will enjoy the quality time spent with parents and improve reading skills while learning about interesting science, math, health and social studies topics.
The goal of that project is to provide children with a variety of literacy experiences, promote language skills and appreciation for literacy and encourage families to be involved in literacy experiences with their children.
