My students need a commercial grade pencil sharpener, so no time is wasted at the pencil sharpener as they are becoming emergent writers!

My Students

4 years ago our PTC generously donated a commercial grade pencil sharpener to our class. Unfortunately, our sharpener took its last spin this year. The hours we spend hand sharpening the 100's of pencils our kindergartners break and use are cutting deeply into our instructional planning time.

My classroom consists of a diverse group of students both in ethnicity (Caucasian, Mexican-American, Ukrainian-American, Vietnamese-American) and socio-economic situations.

We are passionate about becoming writers so there is no time to waste on a broken or dull pencil.

My Project

There is no way to explain how valuable a commercial grade pencil sharpener would benefit a kindergarten classroom. I guess if you timed yourself as you hand sharpen 50 pencils and multiply that by 180 school days, you might get a sense of the time consumption a heavy duty sharpener would save. (It comes to about 30+ hours.) In light of the heavy budget cuts hitting our schools, thank you for considering supporting this basic yet valuable project!

There is so little time to cover so many standards in the classroom.

We need to stay focused on instilling in our students a passion for writing without getting hung up on lack of supplies and broken pencils. They deserve to start off the day with a sharp pencil and paper to jump into writing their wonderful thoughts and ideas!
