Help me give my students materials for hands-on learning activities for developing their communication, self management, advocacy, goal setting and decision making skills that will guide them in living their best, healthiest lives.
My students are fortunate to have both health and PE each week. Both of these classes are essential for helping them to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions for living healthy, happy and purpose-filled lives. However, finding appropriate materials to support skills based health education for my youngest learners is challenging. Much of what is readily available is targeted towards older students. In addition, the "default setting" on everything from characters in books and videos, to the searchable images I use to create resources show white children and families without any disabilities. They are not representative of all, or even most families.
Interactive manipulatives that include diverse representations allow for all children to not only see themselves, but to recognize others as well.
My Family Builders will be a great resource for role playing which is an essential tool in skills based health education. Modelling clay will be very versatile in learning centers where students can demonstrate their understanding without relying on reading and writing skills which are still developing - especially among our multi-language learners. These manipulatives will help me provide the types of purposeful play opportunities that are essential for building a good foundation for health education.
Health education is very personal. Students are learning about themselves and how to support their own wellness. It is therefore essential that all students can see themselves and make connections between their learning in health class and their daily lives.
