My Students
Although I will be teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, my classroom will be supportive, safe, and challenging. Every student will be expected to push the boundaries of their learning by taking risks and thinking outside the box.
Students will be given the necessary tools to be able to start thinking about how their lived experiences have shaped their identities as they navigate the environment they live in.
I will be teaching 88 unique, diverse, and capable students at an urban tk-8 school in Oakland, CA. I firmly believe that each one of these students has something they can bring to the classroom, and something I can learn from. Expectations in my classroom are sky-high because I am unwavering in my belief that high expectations breed the high performance I know every student is capable of.
Each grade has proven to have their own challenges and strengths and I am excited at the challenge of being able to support and push each of my students to achieve their utmost excellence.
My Project
Lessons in my classroom are hands-on and encourage students to explore their curiosity as they navigate a rigorous English curriculum. At the school I teach, students have 3 back-to-back blocks of academic content instruction without a break. With such a short time, I need to keep my students focused and on-task.
Building strong reading habits demands much more than just getting through a book; it requires students to stop, pause, and reflect upon the text to engage critical thinking skills.
Many of my students are learning how to cite and analyze textual evidence for the first time; habits that are built and reinforced with requested items like post-it flags to mark evidence and index cards to practice new vocabulary. I have a stamp system to reward students who maximize these habits and the stamp pads/ink ensures I can keep giving points to all my kiddos!
I try to make my lessons as student-engagement focused as possible. Having chart paper in my room is a necessity so students can engage with different forms of dependent questions and build collaborative working habits. Having a pair of speakers in my classroom will drastically aid the diverse English Language Learners that I have this year; hearing English along side reading it will bolster language acquisition.
With over 85 bright and hungry-to-learn students at my doorstep every single day, making sure germs and hunger stays at bay is critical. With budgets running low, I am requesting hand soap, hand sanitizer, and facial tissues to keep my students free from bacteria and sickness. In addition to their immune health, I'm requesting snacks since students have class from 8:40am-12:30am without any breaks. By having snacks ready in the classroom, I can keep them focused and energized!
