STEM students enter my ninth-grade classroom with little to no scientific writing experience. Scientific writing is often difficult for high school students because the writing curriculum is focused on English papers up to this point in their schooling. STEM students are driven to understand how things work in the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and math. This leads to experimentation. Experimentation without the ability to communicate results and conclusions is just a lab done in a high school science class and quickly forgotten. But, with the ability to write and defend their research, my students take ownership of their experimentation and research and go on to present their research publicly to other members of our local STEM community. These same students take what they learn in their STEM classes in ninth & tenth grades and go on to complete a research internship as juniors or seniors. They write and present this internship research and often use these experiences and papers when applying to college and for scholarships. Being able to effectively express yourself through writing is an essential life skill. We write in so many areas of life. If my students are gifted this book as 14-year-old high school students, then they will be many steps ahead of their peers when it comes to writing about research/experimentation, reports, and almost anything! I plan to take them step by step through this book so that they may learn as much as possible about the efficiency and rewards of scientific writing. What they learn over this first semester of high school will benefit them for years to come.
