Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
Emily and a few other Magnet students are submitting this request. Emily is a highly motivated freshman. She has a vested interest in making videos to educate the faculty and her peers on political and social issues. Emily recently entered a video contest and received Honorable Mention for her video on Global Warming. Emily has an infectious personality and is helping to motivate her peers to work on some video productions. Last year a senior named Jerry, participated in a CSPAN video contests and won 3rd place, he also entered other contests and also won with his video. Emily and other freshmen are submitting this project because they want to continue making educational videos along with practicing and video taping interviews with people in government and in affluent positions.
Video projects are aligned to standards and require higher level thinking. Students are cognitively engaged as they research, study and hold interviews on their subject matter. Students construct their own understanding of their content and share it through their completed video. It is imperative that the student be socially and emotionally invested in their project in order to do their best work.
Students learn several skills to prepare them for the real life and college: Research, planning, scheduling, Interviewing, studying, creativity, video editing, manipulating technology and especially team work.
As I assist the students with their projects and help them submit their final video projects, the students realize how much they can accomplish and in some cases reap the rewards of being recognized or even being rewarded by winning a contest.
In Their Own Words
Giving my classmates an opportunity to express their thoughts through documentaries will help them learn to become independent, passionate, and hardworking citizens. Creating documentaries has been a new way to learn about oral history by it's editing process, questioning techniques, and researching process. From making a documentary myself, I have learned valuable life skills, and I would love to see my classmates learn them as well.
As my classmates work on their projects and we create informative videos, I plan to work with the school to post them on the school's website. These videos will be seen by their peers and hopefully inspire more kids to join in the video production process as well. Students could also enter their videos into competitions to gain confidence from their entries.
I live in Lincoln Heights, an underpriviliged area, with low income families. It is important that we can raise enough money to buy the equipment to make these films, so these students will have a fair chance in a competition. By buying the equipment, students will not have to worry about costing issues and will put their full potential into their videos.
