This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are bright, inquisitive, and love a challenge. I teach enrichment groups for gifted students throughout my day. Gifted students come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities. I teach some gifted students with reading disabilities as well as bilingual students still catching up on English skills.
Origami is an amazing tool to teach students engineering skills as well as advanced geometry vocabulary, visual-spacial skills essential in STEM applications, and most importantly persistence.
Last year, I decided to experiment with origami in our math enrichment group. It turned out to be a very engaging way for students to practice mathematical terms like scalene triangle, obtuse angle, perpendicular, and so much more. Students were able to compare and contrast different folds and the shapes they made. My students loved it so much that we quickly ran out of origami paper. They learn engineering skills as they experiment with their own designs and learn the constraints involved with building with paper.
Even better than the STEM and geometry vocabulary, my students really had to develop their visual-spatial reasoning as well as carefully following directions. I teach gifted students who are used to school being easy for them, and at first, the origami is a lot more difficult than they anticipate. The challenge of getting the folds right leads to the productive struggle that helps students develop grit and persistence.
I am excited teach origami to my students again this year. The origami books I'm requesting will allow students to work more at their own pace and have more choice of projects.
In our rural district, most of the families work in agriculture. Over 80% of our school children are of Hispanic descent, and many of them are English Language Learners. Most students participate in the free lunch.
