Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a low-income high-needs urban community, which I have loved serving for the past 15 years. We are a Title I school, where 100% of our students receive free lunch. This is a community that endures poverty and violence but continues to overcome every challenge by rebuilding and transforming their neighborhood. This resilience and enthusiasm is reflected in our children.

My students come from diverse backgrounds, and all arrive in my classroom eager to learn, to succeed, and to feel safe and loved.

My goal as their teacher is to make sure these needs are met every day. I want to provide them with every opportunity afforded to others. I hope you will join me!

My Project

There is so much to learn in Kindergarten! Yes, I want my students to be strong readers, with numerous strategies in their tool belt. I want them to be budding writers, mathematicians, and scientists. I want so much for them!

As much as I desire anything else for my students, I want them to be emotionally intelligent little people-- I want them to be their best selves!

The items in this project all serve this purpose. We will read books that encourage them to think about and articulate their own ideas about kindness, empathy, feelings, and dealing with tough situations. We'll engage in quickie activities that exercise strategies for managing emotions. And we'll have "quiet corners" containing sensory tools, for those times when they need to take a moment for themselves. And we'll do it all with a little help from friends like you!
