Becoming Contributing Members in Society: A Research Project
My students need texts related to societal issues to help them with their own, independent research projects.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Pearce's classroom raised $516
This project is fully funded
My Students
"I wonder about the way men treat women."
"Gender roles, natural disasters, discrimination, how one person can make a change- these are topics I want to know more about."
"How do my disabilities make me unique?"
I asked my students to write down topics that they are interested in knowing more about. I encouraged them to think about issues in society, issues that matter to them, and that they care about. The above responses demonstrate what my students have on their minds. They are middle school kids, but they have a big desire to learn, and to help, and to understand their role in society better. They want to take on the big issues that sometimes adults are too scared to discourse openly about.
I have many students with diverse needs, but despite their own needs, they want to make their community better, and they want to create an inclusive school environment. With your help, my students can become even more amazing people and learners than they already are.
My Project
Students will be formulating their own research question that is related to issues in society, and issues they are personally interested in. They will be reading the associated texts we are requesting to develop their ideas about their question, and will (hopefully) feel more motivated and empowered to do something about these topics they care about.
This project is designed to increase awareness, engage, empower, and motivate students to try and make a difference within their spheres.
With your help, I hope to give students a lot of voice and choice in designing their own projects, and in choosing the texts that are relevant to their specific research topics.
