My Project
It is difficult to believe that we are nearing the end of the 2023-24 school year, and have to start planning for 2024-25. As my current 8th graders move up to high school, I am already looking forward to meeting my new 7th grade orchestra students in September 2024. I have had the opportunity to meet with some of them as 6th graders throughout the winter, and I can tell already that this is going to be an amazing group to work with. With this excitement comes a lot of review of my current teaching practices, deciding how to allow my future students to improve their technique in order to tackle more challenging styles of using their bows.
A right hand bow grip that is properly shaped is the gateway to continued success on an orchestra instrument.
Not only does this affect how easily a student develops right-hand technique, but it affects the tone that comes out of the instrument. A great deal of frustration can happen when adjustments need to be made to the right hand while breaking habits that were formed in elementary school. For some students, use of a tactile bow teaching aid that can be attached directly to where they grip their bows will allow for fewer grip adjustment “growing pains.” I want my extremely eager incoming seventh graders to be successful right out of the gate! The goal is not to remain reliant on the teaching aid for long, but to help adjust the shape of their hand using something visual as well as tactile. Additionally, I will be teaching a section of beginning orchestra for some seventh graders next year. Since they will be starting from scratch using this tool will set them up with good habits immediately.
