Becoming Authors: Learning to Share with Confidence!
My students need a document camera to show their work and gain confidence in their abilities.

My Students
Do you know what it's like to struggle to find your voice, and to share your work? Imagine you were a minority student, and your teacher wanted your to learn presentation skills. Now imagine your teacher didn't have a lot of visuals for you, dear language learner. Hello! Welcome to my classroom.
I have a class full of bright, wonderful children.
Sadly, many of them come from disadvantaged situations. Despite this fact, all of my students are very bright and hungry to learn, and all of them are very hardworking. I have a difficult class. 50% of my students are ESL, and some of them have disabilities. Our room was not used as a classroom last year, so we did not have a lot of technological resources at the beginning of the year. My kids use our two student computers (and my teacher computer!)to practice their math and writing, but we're still struggling with visually understanding content. You see, most of my students are boys, and 95% of my students are from minority groups. We just got a Smart board and almost died with happiness! It's been a great tool, enabling them to see what I'm saying, and to understand material based on evidence, not just my words.
My Project
I have a difficult class. 50% of my students are ESL students and struggle with their English. It it really hard for them to understand what I am communicating, especially when I'm teaching mathematics and writing. I would love to have a document camera to help empower my students. I would use it to show mathematical models and representations of what we're studying. I would also use it to allow students to share their work and gain confidence in both their verbal skills and their presentation skills. I often ask them to share their writing and share things that they have done well, and some are still too shy (or their level of spoken English is very low) to share verbally. I'd love for them to share visually instead. I would love to increase their global awareness, and take them on on-line tours and then video chat with other classes around the world, in order to give them perspective and compassion. A document camera would greatly improve my student's academic experience.
This is a really important project for my class because my students are disadvantaged and need more support.
I am doing what I can and would love some help supporting my students and giving them confidence. Wouldn't you like to help me serve these children? Thanks for your help!
