My students need 2 iPads and keyboards to be able to skype with classrooms in countries where their first language is Spanish, in order to become fluent Spanish speakers.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Bilingual education has been the center of controversies for the past years. Unfortunately for students caught in the debate, the constant tug-of-war has limited the resources for them to become fluent in their second language. Skype is a great resource for my students to practice a second language.
My students are first graders attending a school located in a low socioeconomic area in Los Angeles.
They are in a dual language class, in which they are learning two languages at the same time. There are 15 boys and 7 girls between the ages of 6 and 7. My students are full of energy and are eager to learn new concepts everyday. Even though a lot of times, because of economic hardship, their parents have two jobs to be able to support their family. Lacking time to spend with them and talk to them about the importance of being bilingual.
My Project
Can you imagine discovering new cultures, languages and ideas, all without leaving your classroom? This is all possible with the help of Skype. These are some of the many reasons that I am asking for some iPad devices. The iPads together with Skype would open the world for my students and completely change the way they learn a second language. The iPads and Skype will give my students the opportunity to contact schools in other countries and have conversations to practice a new language with a class of native speakers. The iPads will provide my students with meaningful, authentic, engaging learning experiences. With the aid of the keyboards and printer my students will be able to write about their experiences using the iPads to Skype with students in other countries and share these with other students and their parents.
Can you imagine conversing and collaborating with a class half-way around the world?
Improving your language skills by having the opportunity to develop these with native speakers of that language? All of this, and more is possible with your help and the help of Skype.
