Becoming A Bookworm

My students need children's books that are an exact match for their reading level to read during reading centers.

My Students

Remember when you were a kid and your teacher asked you to read silently during reading group time? Many students are asked to read but pick books that aren't the correct level so they do anything but actually read the book. I want to change this.

My students attend a Title 1 school, in a large urban school district in Southern Nevada.

My students are culturally diverse and many have parents who are suffering from the high unemployment rates and high foreclosure rates that are devastating my state.

My Project

I have selected a variety of books to go in the class library that are leveled from beginning readers to more advanced readers. Each child has a book bag that will be filled with "just right" reading materials. Research shows that students are most successful and gain the most benefits from silent reading when they are selecting and reading books that are exactly at their reading level.

Improving the quality of our class library will allow my students to select books that interest them that are books they can read successfully independently.

This will foster a love a reading as students feel successful and excited when reading these books.
