Currently in my first grade classroom, I staple words written on index cards and sentence strips on my wall for my students to become familiar with basic sight words/high frequency words. This activity is referred to as a Word Wall. The Word Wall is in alphabetical order and continually changes as we incorporate new words in their vocabulary. The resource that I feel would tremendously benefit my class is a Word Wall Kit. It consists of a 254 plastic tile words which are comprised of words from the American Heritage Word Frequency book, Dolch's list, words for common blends, word patterns, color words, number words, word families, contractions, compound words, homophones, and word ending. The kit includes a plastic pocket chart for displaying the word tiles. This would provide the students with more opportunity to take the words down and use them at their tables. The tiles would last longer than my current paper words. It would also allow for hands-on exploration sorting words by attributes. The children would have more of an ownership of the words! The kit includes a storage case for storing words while not in use. Highlighter strips are provided for the class to highlight the special features in the words. A lesson plan book with activities is included to maximize the use of the Word Wall. This will be a wonderful addition to my classroom as children are exposed to the world of print. Learning basic sight words contributes to growth in reading and writing. My class is composed of ESL (English as Second Language) students and students with special needs. These chldren need the additional opportunity to manipulate and sort words. The concept of a Word Wall that I am using is beneficial, but I want to take my students to a higher level as they not only see, but handle the word tiles and begin to own them in their own reading and writing! Personally, this would benefit me because I would have more time for lesson planning and assessing instead of always writing new words. The biggest advantage to me it that I have a visuaul handicap and it would be much easier for me to place tiles in a pocket chart than trying to staple them level on the board.
