My students are, in one word, AMAZING! They certainly aren't perfect, but they are willing to try and dig in to do hard work. It's been a journey to get them there, but it has been a joy to experience with them.
My classes have learned to respect making mistakes and to learn from them.
One way to become better readers is to give in to the fact that reading text once isn't enough. Close reading strategies are imperative. We strive to read text no less than three times using annotation to truly understand text. WOW! Their discussions and written responses have expanded, and I have the pleasure of experiencing goosebumps when I listen or read their ideas. They are truly Twenty-First Century learners who strive for a strong future.
Our school is on the edge of a rural town in a rural state. Our school community consists of students from many ethnic backgrounds, and our ESOL population is large. We have some students living in poverty, and we have some who live in high-income homes. We are truly a diverse village!
My Project
The books chosen for this project are high-quality, high-interest text that will allow my students to both read for individual pleasure and understanding and allow for collaboration and writing. Text titles including One Crazy Summer, The One and Only Ivan, Bridge to Terabithia, and Hatchet will provide my students with opportunities to delve into rich, diverse text. As of right now, we have a VERY LIMITED classroom library. I am new to this school, and this classroom has, by-far, the most limited resources. Your funds will allow my students to be enveloped with rich, real-world, enjoyable text for years to come.
Research has proven that discussing text is crucial for deep understanding.
I have chosen two copies each of several award-winning texts that my students will devour as they read and discuss on the path to understanding new perspectives and ideas.
