I have a classroom of 31 beautiful souls who come from many walks of life. Some have a lot - supportive parents, lovely homes, technology and books. Others come from low socioeconomic situations and have nothing - no permanent roof over their head, broken homes, not even a book to their name. Still others have come to me recently from the devastating Camp Fire that swept through the nearby towns of Paradise and Magalia.
It is my hope to instill a love of learning in all of my students, regardless of where they come from, while they are in my classroom and beyond.
Instilling a love of learning comes in many forms. Reading exciting books to improve literacy, expanding their understanding in math using manipulatives and other hands on tools, using technology to create and explore and creating an environment where they can all learn. Mixing it up and making learning fun and engaging is always my goal.
I like to start the 4th grade year out by reading the novel "Because of Winn Dixie" by popular children's author Kate DiCamillo. This is a story about a young girl, Opal, who saves a stray dog that she names Winn Dixie. In the end, it is Winn Dixie who saves her and many other characters in the story.
This is a book about second chances, about finding the positive in hard situations, and about showing love and compassion for each other.
I feel these are all very important lessons for all students to learn and this book is a great way to open up conversations about hard topics.
Our school currently does not have enough books for my classroom and the ones we do have are falling apart at the seams. They have been taped and re-taped. I would love for each of my students to be able to enjoy this timeless novel without missing pages. Thank you for your consideration!
