My Project

My fifth graders come from a high-poverty area and often do not have the same access to literature. We have come a long way with technology and the availability of books on their iPads, but this can lead to screen time burnout. I want to help them grow an appreciation of what books can teach us, but without the added time on technology.

The book "Because of Winn Dixie" by Katie DiCamillo captures so many relevant themes for fifth grade, such as friendship and not judging others.

This is something my class has struggled with all year and has made substantial growth with. This book would be the perfect way to reflect on this and wrap up our year.

This would be a great way to transition to middle school, as they will be doing more work with novel studies. More exposure to this style of teaching will help them feel better prepared for next year.
