My Students

My students are an awesome group of 3rd grade service workers. We are Team Paws! It's our goal to change the world with kindness. Even the smallest kind act can mean a lot; hold the door, smile at someone, use your manners, be humble, and be kind, always.

My students understand that what they do and say matters.

They know their actions can make a difference. As members of Team Paws, they learn we truly DO rise by lifting others. Our motto, Spread Kindness, is what makes being a part of Team Paws so special and important. Team Paws is a group of 30 little kids giving back to our community through volunteerism.

For this project, I am requesting materials that will allow my kids to explore through hands-on play.

My Project

I recently had an epiphany during an impromptu indoor free time in my classroom. After a long day of curriculum, I decided it was time for a break, so I scattered the Legos, building blocks, and other toys throughout the classroom, and let the kids have at it. As I lovingly watched them interact and collaborate with each other through play, I was reminded of something I knew all along, but sometimes forget.

Kids learn best through hands-on exploration and play. They were building bridges and castles and competing to create the tallest tower.

I stepped back and watched my kids learn from each other through leadership. With that, I reflected; with such a rigorous daily curriculum, how can I extend this play-style learning into our daily routine?

What if I set up engineering centers during my guided math groups that allowed them to collaborate and grow together? Yes! During these sessions, the kids could explore and invent freely, learning the way kids learn best; through play. They might use the Tube Locks Set to build a truck or even an musical instrument. Maybe my little creators will design something completely new, like a Multiplication Monster, using the Interlocking Plastic Building Discs and Brain Flakes. Their options are completely open-ended. Free choice play and exploration is an important part of a child's development.

Can kids really learn through building and playing with blocks, and other building toys? Of course, because kids learn best through play.

Thank you for your kind consideration to help me grow our nation's next generation of innovators, creators, and engineers.
