My students are small-town Oklahoma kids. They love technology, sports, and social interaction. The majority of them are economically disadvantaged, and a significant portion of them are part or full Native American ethnicity. My students are the reason I am excited to get up in the morning to go to work. The opportunity to get to laugh with, read with, inspire, and be inspired by these wonderful humans is the reason I teach.
I see it as a great and wonderful challenge to inspire these students with a passion for books.
So many of them are not readers; they find books less entertaining than their technology, or they struggle with comprehension, or they think that all school-assigned reading is dull.
I love to see that reluctance to read change and the way their eyes light up when I have new books or have personally purchased books that they wished they could read but no other library had in yet. These are the moments that you are funding when you give to my classroom. You are a part of this increase in literacy and you are changing non-readers into readers. Thank you!
My Project
All of my students are required to read books of choice. They independently select the stories that appeal the most to them, inspire them the most, or best pique their interest. It could be a thriller like The Silent Patient, a classic like Little Women, or a biography by Tim Tebow.
Students need access to the best books.
They need to continually be encouraged to find books that they want to read. One of my biggest goals as an English teacher is to fan the flame of passion for reading. To coax those embers of interest into flames, I need the best tools. We need the best books.
So many of my classroom books (many of which I purchase myself on a regular basis) are becoming tattered from use. Such a wonderful problem to have! But that means we need some new books to add to the mix. This project has a selection of 30+ books, carefully chosen with a variety of genres to appeal to a variety of students.
