This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My young girls are learning all about cosmetology and self-beauty. The teenage years can be rather challenging as their identity is developing and they internalize all they see in the media. My students have low self-esteem and often need guidance on hygiene and beauty tips. Additionally, some of them want to learn about the cosmetology career and want to pursue this on the side while they get their education.
My students will be able to formally practice their beauty techniques and will eventually make a final decision as to whether or not this is what they want to do when they grow older.
We started with the mannequin heads working on hair braiding and makeup. Now we want to learn to apply some of the skills to real people and to each other. The make-up artist chair is easy to move and students can use it one at a time during demonstrations. The bar stools will be used as beauty salon chairs (the real salon chairs are too expensive and are not prime amazon items). Students will use the stools to practice hair braiding and other cosmetology activities. The makeup and apron will help with this process and will give students a more authentic experience.
