Our school serves students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from city hall. Civic students from many areas of the city are identified when they experience difficulty, allowing the focus to be on intervention rather than remediation.
For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate.
Students are excited to explore a variety of science topics, especially butterflies!
My Project
Unless it's raining, our students really enjoy working in the school garden. This urban garden is next to buildings & a concrete parking lot, so it is a beautiful place to our students.
Students will research about butterflies & then create informational posters with messages about both the importance of butterflies in nature & how students can support them with garden plants.
Students will carefully study the environmental impact on endangered butterflies, gathering local, national & international data. As they work with the butterfly kits, they will write & draw about progress as the caterpillars grow into butterflies. They will write & draw their feelings about this garden project.
Students will display informational posters & charts on butterfly kits in the library.
