I teach in a Title I school in Washington, DC. My class is mixed-age Preschool and Pre-K. My students speak Spanish, Mandarin, French, Gujarati, Portuguese, and English. I work in an International Baccalaureate school, dedicated to teaching students to be curious inquirers and global citizens.
They love to sing.
They want to giggle and explore and build towers to the sky. They want to be understood. Their smiles brighten up the room and their laughter echoes through the whole school and spills out onto the street. My classroom is a place of fun and focused learning. My students are self-assured and imaginative. They are always seeking new inspiration and new experiences to help make sense of the world, and I am always looking for ways to provide them with hands-on learning experiences. They take what I give them and master it quickly, then go on to show their friends.
My Project
Some things are easy to teach in an urban setting. When we studied buildings, we were able to walk to nearby construction sites, observe the rapid rate of development in the downtown DC area, and talk about the different buildings we use on a weekly basis.
Other things, like the life cycles of animals, are much harder to teach in this environment. Most of the PK students don't have pets at home, and rarely get opportunities to safely interact with animals. Our playgrounds are open-air, but are embedded in our school building, which means we don't get to dig in the dirt with ants and earthworms. The four PK classes want to get butterfly larvae so the students can watch the changes in real time from larva to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly, and (if we are lucky) to eggs. This project will allow us the opportunity to interact with nature in an urban setting, and to witness most of the butterfly's life cycle.
Your donation will give these students the opportunity to experience something unimaginable for them -- the ability to closely observe and watch as a butterfly changes from one stage to the next.
This long-term project is the type of magical experience that sticks with kids as they grow up and encourages future scientists to ask questions about the world. Please consider donating.
