My students need to beat the odds combining two things I am most passionate about: music and fitness. I plan to use fitness drumsticks paired with yoga mats to teach steady beat, rhythm, and flexibility.
Our school is very diverse. We are a Title 1 school with 80% of our families qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. The children love to be at school because they feel safe and cared for. Many of our students cry when we go on breaks or summer vacation because they love our school environment so much.
The second verse of our school song says it best: Our students have their needs met - Our staff makes sure each day - Our school is our community the place we learn and play!
Today's students need an alternative outlet since there is so much pressure in a world full of standardized testing. Music class is a great place to break free from that during the day. I am passionate about using drumming as a way to provide that opportunity and also help students get fit. The fitness drumsticks will be used in combination with the yoga mats (for sitting/stretching, to protect the floor, and muffle the sound) to songs that I choreograph for students to experience beat and rhythm while also getting a fun workout. My background as a percussionist and fitness enthusiast has given me the ability to share my expertise with my students. Perhaps they will find their inner rock star!
In an environment where children are required to sit a lot, wouldn't it be nice to have an outlet to blow off some steam?
My project would give students an opportunity to do that. Fitness Drumming is an excellent way for children to learn self-awareness, listening skills, coordination of breath and movement, cooperation and patience.
