My Students
Our students are high achievers who love to engage in discussion about Environmental Science and the connections to the real world. We are located on the south side of Chicago and engaging with the environment is not always easy.
My students love to ask questions and often ask insightful ones that require some research outside of our curriculum.
They love to engage with technology, posting to our "Google Classroom" page, creating innovative digital products, and finding ways to research and explain their ideas.
They yearn to learn more and expand their worldview. Experiencing natural and built environments outside of our urban neighborhoods allows them to see new opportunities, problems, solutions, and careers!
My Project
Biozone workbooks are incredibly powerful tools to supplement AP science courses! My students need concrete tools to use to prepare for the AP Environmental exam, and Biozone is a great resource as it provides succinct and relevant text and powerful questioning.
Allowing students to mull over higher order questions is a great way to engage their critical thinking skills.
Minority students in Illinois score lower on the AP Environmental exam, the overall state average for students is 2.61 (out of 5, where a 3+ is passing). The state average for African American students is 1.53 and Hispanic students average 1.78. My class is working to beat the odds and pass the test!
Biozone does an excellent job of pushing students to look deeply at specific topics in APES. It also asks pointed questions that require them to do more than mine the reading for answers but apply what they have read and learned previously.
More than half of students from low‑income households
