This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach elementary and middle school students in an urban school. My students are full of energy, creativity, and talent.

My students love music!

I teach in an area with a lot of economic hardship which limits my students’ access to instruments, private lessons, and technology. However, it in no way limits their love of music and potential to compose and perform. They truly enjoy playing all the instruments in the classroom, learning to sing and play their favorite songs and write their own music.

My Project

So much music today is digital! When students talk about music they love many are talking about electronic dance music and digitally mixed rap beats. Students can spend hours on YouTube freestyle rapping and singing to beats that other digital musicians have created, but I would like to hear them rapping to beats they created themselves!

Learning to record and mix beats with a digital platform supports creative expression and can also be a pathway to a future career.

Soundtrap is an online subscription program that introduces students to the basics of digital music in a format that is easy to use and teaches fundamental mixing skills. With a full access subscription the possibilities for creating amazing music are endless. The program also support online collaboration. Students can share their creations with me and each other and work together adding vocals and mixing tracks even in a remote learning setting.

Soundtrap offered a free trial to all music educators this spring to help support music in a distance learning setting. I took advantage of this offer it was a lifeline for me and my students to continue creating music together. We are hooked! Help me continue to give my students access to this fantastic resource with an annual subscription for 100 seats for next year. What is so great about this program in these uncertain times is that we will get full use of the program no matter if we are in school or distance learning from home.
