My Students

My school is located in a rural community. We are one of the poorest elementary schools in the district. We are a Title I school with approximately 500 students. Through a government-subsidized program, all of my students are on free lunch and breakfast. Our attendance zone includes a domestic violence safe house, so for some students, school is the most reliable constant in their lives.

Because of the low socio-economic standing of our community, our kids go without things other schools consider standard.

My Project

I incorporate all styles of music education in my classroom but one of the very basic pedagogies is Orff. Orff is based on playing simple (for the little ones - not so simple for the older ones) patterns on barred instruments. (No, not banned instruments! Instruments with bars - like xylophones!)

While my school has a great collection of very nice xylophones, our mallets are falling apart!

Can you imagine how disruptive it is to have the top of a mallet fly off across the room when a student gets a little overzealous in their playing? (Overzealous is usually a good thing in music class!) Not only that, half of the mallets have broken handles and it's difficult to find two that match.
