My Students
Everyone wants to feel that they belong or be a part of something greater than themselves. This also includes my students. With this, sports in schools plays an important part in kids achieving this goal. Along with that, having the appropriate gear for practices and games is a big self esteem booster.
Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty providing school supplies, as well adequate clothing for practicing sports.
Due to school fund cuts in our district, we have not had any new practice gear in about four years. My students are in desperate need of new uniforms. The goal I want to achieve with my students is to open their eyes to all possibilities available for them to be successful.
My Project
My students go to an urban school where 95 percent are on free or reduced price lunch programs. My students are in need of practice shorts for Cross Country. This will help them focus more on training and being able to compete at a higher level.
Over the years, my experience has been that students do not always have practice gear.
Since our district has had several budget cuts in the last four years, athletics has had to make do with old practice gear by recycling gear until it is worn out. I have noticed that when students are supplied with practice gear like these shorts for Cross Country, it gives them a feeling of being a part of something greater than themselves and a sense of school pride. My goal is to make sure that I help empower students to achieve to their best ability in sports, as well as in life.
