Bears in Transitional Kindergarten Classrooms

My Project

I have had a 1-1 bear program in my kindergarten or transitional kindergarten program for the past 10 years. This means that each child who enters my classroom receives their own teddy bear. These bears become a comfort in times of worry, friends at playtime, tools for telling stories, and a connection to their kindergarten year forever. These bears help us to build a classroom community at the beginning of the year, guide us as we navigate the challenges of separation anxiety, and go home with the children on the final day of kindergarten or TK.

In a time when our entire world is struggling with social emotional health, my classroom bears built a strong foundation of support and love for my students.

I have received pictures of nervous middle schoolers holding their bears at home, as they prepare for a new transition. When students come in missing home, they run to their bears for a cuddle. At times, students are able to share their big emotions through the proxy of the bear. It's amazing how often on a difficult day for a child, the bear has had a similar life experience.

This year, we are growing our Transitional Kindergarten program. Instead of just my classroom, the district plans to open 4 new TK classes in response to the new law that changes the kindergarten start birthdate from Decemeber 31 to September 1. I want all TK students to be able to experience the 1-1 bear program as my students have. Five-year-olds have a vivid imagination and need play to learn well. Having bears as a focal point in this program nurtures that imagination and play while supporting the social emotional development as they transition into kindergarten.
