My Students

My elementary school is a Title I school. Over 70% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. We are a culturally diverse school with a high English Language Learner population. We are also challenged with a large special education population.

The special education program has seen a growth of students with autism in the last 3 years.

I have been teaching special education at my school with students with developmental delays to students with autism. Despite the fact these students may struggle academically, socially, or both, they show an interest in improving themselves by striving to become the best they can be.

My Project

I am choosing some flexible seating that will allow students to take charge of their learning and make choices that work best for them. During reading times, work that they will do on the iPad, and as a choice during break and independent learning they will be able to choose a location in the classroom that works for them and still maintain a safe distance from others in the classroom. The beanbag chairs will allow for comfortable floor seating options. They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom.

I believe if students are comfortable it will help motivate them to read.

I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. Students are usually more engaged in their reading and less disruptive especially since their peer interaction is currently limited.

I also selected a whiteboard, when I am hooked up to the projector my students have a hard time seeing what I am projecting since my classroom does not have a screen. I believe in using technology to keep my students engaged and happy.

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options so that they can make effective learning choices. All of the items I have chosen is to help keep my students engaged, increase their interest in reading, and allow them to make good choices.
