Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Last week, my class of third graders earned the right to sit in "book nooks.” This means that they have consistently shown such focus and effort in reading at their desks that they now get to choose places in the classroom to sit and read. Currently, most of them make a b-line for the two (well-used and well-loved) camping chairs and a small furry carpet we have deemed "Mr. Fluffy." Reading in comfort is what real readers do. It is one thing that helps to foster a genuine love for books and reading. Unfortunately, sitting on a tile floor (as many of my students have to do) is not very comfortable. In addition, many of my students' parents are illiterate or non-practicing readers. Thus, I feel that it is imperative to model how wonderful reading-for-fun can really be within the walls of my classroom. Last week, the "Fantastic Firecrackers" (the name my students have chosen for themselves) told me that they would love to have some bean bags to sit on during Readers Workshop. I told them that I would look into it! We would be very appreciative to have these in our classroom.
